Mikey O

Name: Mikey O
Status: Available for Adoption!
Species: Horse
Breed: Off Track Thoroughbred
Height: 16 hands
Color: Bay with Stripe and heart on forelock
Age: 11 Years
Sex:
Gelding
Temperament: Excellent
Riding Category: Walks, Trots, Canters in both directions, now jumping cross rails and straight rails; Trainers recommendation: Potential Showhorse.

When Amanda Sorvino got a call from a good friend, racehorse trainer Bob Kotenko, she knew he was calling to place one of his beloved racehorses. Mikey O had been owned and trained by Bob for 9 years. He won almost a quarter of a million dollars in his rewarding career. Bob felt that his long time friend and beloved athlete now deserved a new career as a show horse. He knew he had the competitive edge it took to make it in the show circuit due to his years of achievement on the track. He also knew he had the necessary temperament to be handle by children. He's a gentle horse who is friendly, highly intelligent, and extremely good natured. He had never kicked or bitten. So when Amanda got that call, she said, "I had a feeling you were about to retire Mikey ... I have a stall waiting for him."

Not only did HorseFellas have a stall for the striking horse, but a new built-in companion as well ... the adorable buckskin quarter pony named Stardust. Mikey picked up on Stardust's disability right away ...

a genetic disease causing temporary seizures called HYPP. He shadowed him out at pasture to protect him from bigger horses that might bully him. The two horses had neighboring stalls and would often whinny to each other. A bond had been established that will never be broken between Mikey O and Stardust. And it is our hope that Mikey O and Stardust will eventually be adopted out together, one as a show horse, the other as a pet and pleasure horse. These two horses are an unbeatable pair, and deserve to stay together forever.

Stargazer

Breed: Quarterhorse
Color: Gray Dapple
Age: 8
Rescued from: slaughter auction

Stargazer is a beautiful gray dapple quarterhorse who was purchased at a slaughter auction.
The killers and dealers were bidding high on him, and he was sold for $950.00

Where they wanted him for meat or for a resales project, we're glad he found his way to Gray Dapple.

This is one good-looking horse and he's a beautiful mover too. The sky's the limit with this guy.
He is currently in training and would probably be best suited as a dressage horse.

Perfect feet, perfect conformation -- perfect horse, ALMOST, LOL!

White Smoke

Thanks to the tenacious rescue efforts of famous and beloved FOB Sharon Crumb, White Smoke was saved from slaughter...

Regally bred by Gainesway Thoroughbreds in Kentucky, this knock-dead gorgeous gray dapple was destined for great things ... his father is the famous "Smoke Glacken" and he started out following Daddy's footsteps, winning $21,770.00 and about to do more when he tragically endured knee chip injuries in his last race and was sent to the kill sale, and then bought by one of New Holland's most notorious killer buyers. Waiting to be shipped to Mexico in a filthy pen, White Smoke was noticed by the FOBs (Fans of Barbaro) when AC4H's Christy kindly posted pix of him hoping someone would come through for him on the board. The FOBs stayed up late hours paypaling in donations to bail him out of the kill truck. At 11:00 pm White Smoke's bail was cut, and Amanda's hauler from Gray Dapple phoned the killer buyer, all to find out that he wanted her to meet him out at Luv's Truck Stop at 1:00 am. Fearing a "Ted Bundy" horror show, the hauler's hubbie put his foot down and told his wife she could not travel after hours to meet up with the killer. So Amanda contacted Christy with renowned FOB, Lucille Matte, and Plan B went into effect ... Christy hauled Smoke over to her house at the crack of dawn and White Smoke was picked up by Amanda and her hauler hours later.

White Smoke has been residing at Gray Dapple since the winter of 2008. He goes by the nick-name, "Silver Snow," and enjoys frolicking about in a 6 acre pasture with buddies, Big Red and Stoltzfus. Smoke trots, canters, and gallops across the rolling green hills. He is 100% pasture sound. But Gray Dapple's vet confirmed in x-rays that White Smoke should never be ridden again, or he will not stay sound. White Smoke dreams of being adopted with his constant companion, a super handsome chestnut thoroughbred named Big Red. We realize this is not a practical request, but are hoping that a special couple who yearns to have two gorgeous thoroughbreds waiting for them outside their picture window will contact us.

At 5 years old White Smoke wants the human friend of a lifetime. He has his whole life ahead of him and loves children, dogs and even elderly adults. His most recent visitor and fan, Randy, came all the way from Norway to see him. She was moved by his spring from slaughter and the team effort in saving his life on the part of the FOBs. Pictures were taken of her unforgettable trip to meet the horse that so many saved and loved based on an Internet photo of a gray dapple horse in a slaughter pen. Randy will never forget White Smoke, and has promised to write him letters over time.

Could you be this breathtakingly beautiful horse's new soulmate? Maybe this was meant to be. Call today to find out more about White Smoke!

Big Red

Name: Big Red
Status: Available for Adoption!
Species: Horse
Breed: Off Track Thoroughbred
Height:
Color: Chestnut
Age: 12 Years
Sex:
Gelding
Big Red was claimed by trainer Bob Kotenko for the mere purpose of saving his life. The poor horse cracked his sesamoid in his last race. Kotenko knew he would have no place to go but the slaughterhouse. Big Red has been with Gray Dapple for the past 4 years. He is extremely attached to White Smoke, another pasture pal injured after his last race. Both horses walk, trot, canter, and gallop sound in the pasture every day. However, the vet says they can never be ridden again to ensure their pasture soundness. So if you live a comfortable life and would like to do something admirable for equine society, please apply to adopt this stunning pair together as pasture pets.

Bob Marley
Update!  Bob Marley is now adopted by Becca and Family and doing wonderfully in South Carolina!

ADOPT BOB MARLEY, rescued on HBO's Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel's award winning episode, "Running for their Lives"

JOCKEY CLUB NAME: MCCANN'S IRISH GOLD
BREED: Thoroughbred
AGE: 17
SEX: Gelding
COLOR: White
HEIGHT: 16.2 hands
TEMPERAMENT: Excellent
RIDING CATEGORY: Light pleasure horse, lower level dressage horse, loyal companion

Bob Marley was standing in Bruce Rotz's slaughter pen with no chance of rescue on the undercover TV show created to expose American horse racing's dirtiest little secret ... from the stable to the table ... racehorses being churned out for human consumption slaughter. It's a typical story ... racehorses are done at the track. So they are hauled off to the slaughter sale. But sadly, Bob Marley has a slightly different story. His Jockey Club name was "McCann's Irish Gold." His career as a racehorse was unimpressive. He was then sent off to be a riding horse and do other things with his life. Years went by. He got older ...

Now 17, his dark dapples of youth faded to white, and old black mane now knotted in orange deadlocks, this horse was obviously "put away somewhere" to rot in a clay paddock for years. His orange deadlocks happened when he rolled in the clay mud and was never care for or brushed. He was several hundred pounds underweight, so he was fed just enough to keep him alive over the years. He was spent, ugly, and old -- A faded memory of what he once was, worthless to American society which requires him to be "useful" for some purpose. Bob Marley had taken his second to last ride on a cattle trailer to the Monday Meat Sale at New Holland Sales Stables. His last ride would be Bruce Rotz's 40 head semi-haul to a slaughterhouse in San Bernabe, Mexico. No one cared. No one noticed him ...

Well, someone eventually did. And Amanda Sorvino got a call from a fellow rescuer telling her there was a tall, aged gray dapple with no hope of rescue. When Sorvino arrived at New Holland, the Fans of Barbaro, AKA "FOBs," an online networking team that fundraises off the cuff to save slaughter bound thoroughbreds, had asked if Gray Dapple had room for any of the grays.

As pictures were sent via cell phones to the FOBs, funds were raised within minutes to spring Bob Marley, the whited out dapple with orange dread locks. Sorvino left New Holland at the end of the day with 3 rescued horses en route to Gray Dapple's "Apple Butter Quarantine Farm." She spent 3 hours combing out and shampooing Bob's Dread locks and then giving him a snappy haircut.

Bob Marley is 100% sound for riding. He walks, trots and canters in both directions. He enjoys lower level dressage. Please apply to adopt this elegant and worthy equine ... and show the American public that giving an older horse a second chance is a mark of character. Star with Bob Marley in Paul Sorvino's upcoming documentary film, "Horses R Pets!"

Aspercel

Name: Aspercel
Status: Available for Adoption!
Species: Horse
Breed: Thoroughbred
Height: 16.1
Color: Gray Dapple
Age: 8 1/2 Years
Sex:
Gelding
Aspercel was rescued at the New Holland Sale in 2006 when a dealer drove him in from South Carolina, hoping to turn a profit on him. Although he wouldn't have landed in the meat pen that day, he ran the risk of going from auction to auction to auction, and ultimately, ending up at a slaughterhouse.

We had Aspie trained for several years as an English riding horse. He can easily jump 3 feet and under, and was trained by a pro dressage trainer/judge in lower level dressage. He was also featured in Amanda Sorvino's movie, "The Trouble with Cali."

Aspie has a fantastic disposition and is extremely friendly. He is well-connected to people and other horses. He behaves nicely for the vet, farrier, etc. He is familiar with cross-ties, and clips and bathes with no problems. He does experience mild anxiety when on a trailer and was accompanied by a "pony horse" on show hauls.  He spent the last year showing and winning

ribbons in the Virginia/Maryland show circuit with a teenage girl. Ultimately the girl stopped riding, and lost interest in Aspie. The girl's parents, although heartbroken, returned Aspie to Gray Dapple.
We will only consider a forever home for Aspie. He is a spectacular horse, with beauty, brains, a zestful personality, and showmanship. He deserves a permanent, loving, home.

Sad Angel

Update!  Angel is now adopted by Laura and her family and doing wonderfully!

Name: Sad Angel
Status: Available for Adoption!
Species: Horse
Breed: Arabian Cross
Color: Gray
Age: unknown
Sex:
Mare

Just when it couldn't get any worse for this poor Arabian-cross mare, all hope of her rescue was shattered. Photo's below show her at New Holland in a killer buyers direct to kill pen.

Sad Angel was special because a tear was rolling down her face when we first saw her ... she was bitten to shreds by other frightened kill pen horses. She had about a hundred bites on her skin and blood was trickling down her side, as documented in one of the photos.

This particular killer buyer only works with one rescue at New Holland. Unfortunately, the rescuer who works with him did not accommodate Angel's rescue. Angel was originally chosen along with a team of driving horses, and 2 offtrack thoroughbreds by Amanda to be saved. "They just came up to me and said in their own way, "Get me out of here," explains Amanda.

Amanda took their photos and posted them on Facebook.A community of horse lovers rallied together to help save all 5
horses ... but tragically, the rescuer botched up the deal, telling the killer buyer not to trust us and that we were "activists"
who would ultimately expose him. Hence, despite almost $2000,00 raised on Facebook for their bail, and $2500.00 cash fronted by Gray Dapple's exec board member, Howard Brodsky, the 4 other horses were sent to Canada to meet the end of their
short lives at the gates of a slaughterhouse.

Ultimately, the rescuer caved in and released Sad Angel to Howard Brodsky, after he notified her in writing that a lawsuit
would commence if she indeed signed these horses' death warrants.

To protect Sad Angel, and due to numerous threats by the rescuer, we had to keep news of her survival a secret until now.

Sad Angel's bites are now gone. She has gained a substantial amount of weight. She loves grazing in the pasture next to Stargazer. Sad Angel is an excellent children's riding horse. She is calm and willing and gentle with children of all
ages -- and to boot, she is a comfortable ride.

Sad Angel would do best with someone who wants to ride her for pleasure only. She has knowledge of dressage, English and Western riding. It is possible that she is a retired lesson horse.

After a nightmarish couple of weeks in the kill pen, Sad Angel deserves the happy home of a lifetime. Angel will follow
you around in her pasture if you come to visit her. She has excellent stall manners and loves to be brushed. She cried for
the last time in her kill pen but miraculously made it out. Gray Dapple wanted to thank the facebook crowd for routing for
Sad Angel. We apologize that we could not announce her safety until now.

Buttercup

Name: Buttercup
Status: Available for Adoption!
Species: Horse
Breed: Thoroughbred
Color: Bay with white blaze
Age: 7 years
Sex: Mare
Height: 16.3 hands
Temperament: Excellent, docile, sweet, kid-proof

Buttercup is one of 10 survivors of Bravo Packing, a horse slaughterhouse for zoo consumption in Carney's Point, NJ.

Amanda Sorvino spent much of 2008 going undercover to expose the hidden horrors of Monty Merola, the plant manager

of Bravo Packing. Monty died last recently after complications due to terminal throat cancer. He was brought

up on several felony animal cruelty charges just months before his death.

Buttercup was living at Bravo for close to a year and was a part of Monty's "lean meat" experiment. To procure lean meat,

a horse must start out fat and healthy and then be starved for months to a point of lean muscle tissue. Buttercup was not

only starved at the Bravo kill lot, but medically neglected as well. She had gashes on her right front leg and severe cellulitis

on her left back leg that were left untreated by Monty and Joe Merola for months. Consequently, Buttercup will have

chronic cellulitis for the rest of her life in her left back leg. Luckily, she is still rid-able and the vet would like her to be ridden

to keep the swelling down.

Buttercup rehabbed for months at the Sorvinos' ranch. The day she left Bravo she was rated a #1 on the Henneke scale

by the Sorvinos' vet: death is a zero. Nine is the highest score.

Here are pictures of Buttercup's rehabilitation progress in sequence. As you can see, she's come a long way since her

days at the New Jersey horse slaughterhouse.

Buttercup is so sweet and gentle, we have put young children in her stall to brush her and talk to her. She is a beautiful and

strikingly tall horse -- and the current babysitter for the nurse mare foals features on Nat Geo's "Rescue Ink Unleashed."

We would like to thank Paul Sorvino for his financial commitment to saving Buttercup and the other Bravo horses that

came to recover and live at his ranch.

Money talks, and without this man's generous pocket book, none of the Bravo horses ever would have made it after the

level of starvation they endured at Bravo Packing. We would also like to thank Cross River vets for their commitment to

the Bravo horses.

Buttercup is now available for adoption. She will make a nice pleasure horse for an adult or child. She is a historic horse

who survived living in America's last existing horse slaughterhouse. Buttercup will be used as a mascot to end horse

slaughter in New Jersey. Only she knows for sure what happened behind closed doors at the plant. We can only hope that

the memories of the past begin to fade and that Buttercup can begin a brand new life with an amazing new adoptive

family.

Party Boy

: Gelding

:Appaloosa/Paint Cross
Age
: Yearling
Color
: Caramel
Rescued from
: Nurse Mare Ranch

Party Boy
and Prancer are rescued nurse mare foals. The nurse mare industry is the dirty little secret of the thoroughbred
breeding industry. When a future race baby foal is born at a thoroughbred breeding farm, its mother is sent away
immediately to be re-bred while the foal is raised by a surrogate mother AKA a nurse mare. Nurse mares come from
depressing ranches where big draft and quarterhorse mares are put to work having foals that are ripped away from their
mothers as soon as they get the necessary colostrum from their milk, which can be within the first day of two of life.

The
mother mares are hauled away to the pricey thoroughbred ranches while the poor little nurse mare foals are left
behind to either die of be sold to slaughter.

Party
Boy and Prancer have always been together since losing their beloved mothers. They will never be separated, and
must be adopted out together. Party Boy was born with crooked knees, and almost died as a young foal. Amanda got
him kinetic energy therapy and massage therapy for months. The therapy worked, and Party will be pasture sound for life,
but would be best suited as a companion horse. Party Boy is a hilarious horse! He has an addictive personality and is
the cutest horse ever!

Prancer
is very fancy looking and will be an excellent show riding prospect someday for a flashy young rider. This
yearling has it all! Prancer is highly intelligent and has learned to perform tricks. He LOVES peppermints and other treats.

Party
Boy and Prancer are so bonded -- they are always together! Apply to adopt this entertaining pair today!

Bertie's Dream

BREED: THOROUGHBRED
PEDIGREE: JOCKEY CLUB:
SEX: GELDING
AGE: 9
height: 15,3
COLOR: GRAY DAPPLE
DISCIPLINE: EQUITATION/HUNTER/PLEASURE HORSE

Sired by Red Scamper and out of Jennie's Queen, Bertie has a rescue story that inspires horse lovers everywhere. After
Amanda Sorvino rescued Exceller's grandson, FedEx Man,for her father, Paul Sorvino and another OTTB from a killer buyer
at New Holland, she was out of cash. The young killer buyer told her he had picked out a gray dapple just for her, knowing
she has a weakness for dapples. Strangely enough, just the night before, she had been given a beautiful blue rose necklace,
blessed by Tibetan monks, by a generous horse advocate as a good luck gift for the day ahead at New Holland. "I'm afraid
I'm out of cash," explained Amanda, to the killer, "But I have this expensive necklace on that I could give you until I see you
again to give you the money you want for the horse." The killer looked at her skeptically, waited a few seconds, and said,
"How could I say no to such an unusual offering?" The Indian trade took place, as shocked New Holland cowboys stood
there with their mouths agape.

Bertice was saved from slaughter, thanks to this magical necklace and the person who gave it to Amanda. Now Bertice is
up for adoption, after years of love, training and memories with the Sorvino family. He's your next best friend pleasure horse
and riding is his favorite thing in the world! He walks, trots, and canters in both directions on the correct lead. He also jumps
willingly over low fences. Bertie's Dream is the ultimate pet, pleasure horse, and companion of a lifetime. Could he make
your dreams come true tomorrow? Apply to adopt Bertice on www.horsefellas.com.

Berties is such an inspiration that his portrait was painted by renowned thoroughbred artist, Nick Martinez. Adopt Bertice
